The Donatella Interview

"IF I could dress anyone I'd like to dress the Queen - she can handle anything," said Donatella Versace yesterday. "I'd put her in black - she never wears black - and add a little leather, maybe. A little rock 'n' roll." It was a timely and headline-grabbing statement during a live interview at the Oxford University Union conducted by Tim Blanks that went some way to confound misconceptions about this bombshell blonde, come-to-bed-accented designer who - far from the caricature she is assumed to be - proved herself to be grounded and friendly, funny and open, and one who has truly overcome adversity to put Versace at the top of the fashion pile once again. Insightful about the effect that the tragic 1997 murder of her brother had on her work, she admitted that the signature house iconography - so prevalent in her recent collections - had been out of bounds emotionally when she first took the reins of the brand that Gianni had founded. "At the beginning, after my brother's terrible death, all the iconography was like a sanctuary, so special, it felt untouchable," she said. "I had to find my own voice. It was only after his death that I realised how difficult the job was. With him it had been exciting and easy but all of a sudden it was completely different." "But you also have to remember that it was the end of the Nineties. For a while since then we all moved away from the bling we were famous for - it was too sexy, not in line with the general mood - but now, certainly in 2012, it's back; people are having fun with fashion again, so I had to find the courage to look at the past in a new perspective. Suddenly when I looked at his last collection, of 1997, I started not to be afraid anymore." Her own personal image, she says, is in part self-protection:

"Fashion is a weapon that you can use when you need it. I think my own look makes people think I'm tough but when they get to know me I'm very different. It's like armour that was useful to me in the first years after Gianni's death. It was difficult to live that pain in public - and to be compared to him when he was the genius and I was only ever the accessory. It was hard to hear people constantly say 'will she make it?' I don't mean to sound like a martyr - just to make the point that I used my personal image to hide all these emotions." To a rapt audience of students and a front row support team including her daughter Allegra, close friend Rupert Everett and favourite young British designers Erdem and Christopher Kane ("the best fashion designer in England - I learn so much from him, I hope he learns a little from me"), Versace admitted to a love of reality television: "I'm sure people don't have time to watch anything about me but I'd love to do a show - something with my friend Rupert Everett, wouldn't it be great!"; to being an eternal optimist and - afterwards - to having been very nervous up there "but I know Tim well enough to know that if I said anything stupid he'd make it better." She enlivened things by recalling the time she met Elizabeth Taylor who, in fact, stole from her - "My brother collected vintage jewellery and I was wearing a ring that he'd given me - Elizabeth said in this extraordinary breathy voice: 'Darling I love your ring, may I try it?' And she didn't give it back! She put it on and breathed, 'oh darling thank you, you didn't have to do that!' But I hadn't!" - and expressed nostalgia about her days as a rock groupie following Axel Rose around: "These days there is no time for that - I'd like to watch my son play [Daniel Versace plays the guitar for a band called Nucleus], but he won't have me in the audience yet." Asked about her decision to launch a line with H&M, Versace revealed that the collaboration had given her renewed confidence in her craft: "It gave me such self esteem because we saw this amazing appetite for the brand," she said.

"H&M is a fantastic, incredible company - I had no idea how they'd make my designs come to life at those prices, but they did it without restricting me at all." And she has her own idea about how high fashion should take on the recession: "Some say the economy means that you have to persuade people to invest in clothes - to buy less things but more expensive things. I disagree - invest in jewellery, or a house, maybe, but not in fashion. Designers have to ensure that their brand stays in the real world - like we have, hopefully, with Versus - but then you have to work hard to make sure the creativity survives. In hard times you still have to be extreme. Fashion always has to be about changing and moving forward, to make people dream. My job now is to make our aesthetic evolve while remaining truly Versace - I want to make dresses that every woman wants: sexy and jaw-dropping - I always want it to be relevant but I also want it to be always about glamour." Asked afterwards how she planned to target the Queen as her next muse, Donatella was reminded of an outfit the monarch recently wore to meet British fashion designers at the Royal Academy - which some mistook for a Christopher Kane design. "Hang on, I have to go and ask him," she said, before rushing off to quiz her protégé about it. "No it wasn't mine," said Chris, "but lots of people asked me the same question". Perhaps a little Versace in the royal wardrobe isn't such a long shot after all.

Dressing Watson

FORMER stylists to Vogue cover girl Emma Watson Katie Clark and Polly Judge have explained how they decided what outfits to dress her in. The duo styled the actress for two years, picking dresses such as the black Rafael Lopez dress that she wore to the London premiere of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 and the velvet Vionnet gown that she donned for a Claridge's party in November 2010. "For each event, we work closely as a team putting an inspiration board together, like the ones you see on our website home page," Clark said. "We collate vintage pictures with tear sheets and runway stills and from this we have a very clear idea of the look we want to achieve." As well as Watson, the pair have also dressed VOGUE.COM contributor Pixie Lott, Razorlight, and former Burberry boy George Craig. This month, Clark and Judge have launched their latest project: a new website, named Stardust Vintage, with pieces sourced from European flea markets; the wardrobes of private clients; and American clothing auctions. All items are curated into current season trends, making it even easier to find desirable treasures. Customers are also invited to email the duo with any personal styling queries. "We have always had a love of vintage and often use unique pieces within our styling for fashion shoots and personal clients," Judge told us. "During the years, we had amassed a great collection of clothing and accessories and felt the time was right to share them." For spring/summer 2012, the pair cites Fifties and Eighties florals; cut-off cowboy boots; and romantic lace and sheer pieces as the vintage world's key trends, while autumn/winter 2012-13 will see the rise of Russian-inspired military looks; animal print; and hand-stitched embellishment. Keen to impart their knowledge of retro dressing, the pair have revealed their ultimate tips to achieve vintage cool: Do keep in mind the key trends and colours as you buy - whether it's spots or stripes, Fifties and Eighties, pastels or florals - as it will make searching that bit easier. Don't go by the size on the label as vintage clothes can have very different sizing. If you are buying online make sure you read the measurements carefully. We always think it is a good idea to measure a piece of clothing you already have that is a similar shape and compare that with the item you wish to buy. Don't dress in vintage from head to toe! You don't want to look like you just stepped out of a period drama. Do remember the pieces may not be perfect, but they do have a history and a story and you will always look unique.

The Maison will also be hosting two piano days on June 4 and 5 from 1pm, during which a selection of pianists will play works by legendary composers including Beethoven, Debussy, Schubert and Brahms.

The Diamond Queen

ASPREY is celebrating the Diamond Jubilee by collaborating with light artist Chris Levine, whose famous 2004 portrait of the Queen featured the monarch wearing the diamond diadem that she wore to her 1953 Coronation. Especially for the Jubilee, Asprey has recreated the diadem - entitled The Diamond Queen - and the finished product will be sold via sealed bids throughout the month of June. Proceeds will be split between two of the Queen's charities - The Woodland Trust and QEST. In the market for a crown? The finished product was made by laser-cutting and engraving a large sheet of platinum, decorating it with 1000 diamonds and attaching 25 freshwater pearls via tiny platinum screws. As an impressive finishing touch, a natural fancy intense yellow round brilliant diamond will be set into an 18-carat yellow gold collet at the centre of the diadem.

In Royal Fashion

Designer and VOGUE.COM blogger Henry Holland and his muse, Agyness Deyn, met the Queen last night at a star-studded event held at the Royal Academy of Arts, celebrating the arts and attended by the country's biggest stars - from actors and musicians to comedians and designers, including Paul McCartney, U2's Bono, Sarah Burton, David Walliams and Tracey Emin. "It was incredible - one of the most surreal and exciting experiences ever," Holland told us this morning. "Aggy and I met Her Majesty and had a brief chat about being a designer. She was lovely and personable and funny! Definitely one for the grandkids!" long-term friend and designer Henry Holland are among a host of fashion names who will meet the Queen tonight at an event held at the Royal Academy of Arts, named A Celebration Of The Arts. "I'm really excited," Deyn told us this afternoon. "I have always wanted to meet the Queen - I couldn't believe it when Henry called me about it. I rang my mum and said: 'Mum, I'm actually going to meet the Queen.' I'm not a royalist as such, but I love the royal family. I think the Queen's really cool. I love how she dresses - she always looks so demure." Over 850 of the country's best actors, actresses, directors, dancers, choreographers, artists, musicians, as well as designers and their muses, will attend the event. Expected names include Christopher Bailey, Giles Deacon, Christopher Kane, Mary Katrantzou, Erdem, Richard Nicoll, Bruce Oldfield, Zandra Rhodes, Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood, Matthew Williamson, Sarah Burton and Manolo Blahnik. While many may be deliberating over what to wear, Deyn has her outfit sorted. "Henry's made me a dress," she said. "I thought that sounded like a good idea. It's the navy dress covered in sparkly stuff from his autumn/winter 2012-13 show."

Vuitton Values

LOUIS VUITTON has been named the world's most valuable luxury brand for a seventh consecutive year, following a study conducted by global research brand Millward Brown Optimor and based on an analysis of company performance, as well as consumer interviews. The French fashion house, which was valued at $25.9 billion (£16.5 billion), beat off stiff competition from Hèrmes, who came second with $19.1 billion (£12.1 billion) - a 61 per cent rise from last year. Swiss watch brand Rolex ranked third place, with $7.17 billion (£4.57 billion). "Luxury is seen as a good investment with people increasingly buying classic pieces rather than high fashion," Millward Brown Optimor managing director Nick Cooper said in a statement. "Those who can afford it indulge, including young professionals who, increasingly unable to buy houses, are spending their disposable income on mid-tier luxury." The study credited quality craftsmanship, heritage and history as key components of success for luxury brands. Alongside Hennessy cognac and Moet & Chandon Champagne, other fashion brands to make the top ten include Chanel with $6.68 billion (£4.25 billion); Gucci at number five with $6.42 billion (£4.09 billion); Prada at six with $5.7 billion (£3.63 billion); Cartier at seven with $4.8 billion (£3.06 billion); and Burberry in tenth place with $4.09 billion (£2.6 billion).

The Real Louboutin

CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN does not take pleasure in creating painful shoes, contrary to popular belief. "I have been misquoted," he told us. "People say I am the king of painful shoes. I don't want to create painful shoes, but it is not my job to create something comfortable. I try to make high heels as comfortable as they can be, but my priority is design, beauty and sexiness. I'm not against them, but comfort is not my focus." Louboutin is currently celebrating his 20th anniversary in fashion and this year is set to be one of his busiest yet. He is currently the subject of an extensive retrospective exhibition at London's Design Museum; on Tuesday night scooped Condé Nast Traveller's Retail honour during its annual Innovation & Design Awards - held at the Mariott Hotel in London's Grosvenor Square; and has signed up to be a judge of Martini Royale's new search for the face of Martini - in which members of the public can enter to become the brand's next campaign star. Of all his many career successes, the designer's all-time proudest moment was creating the shoes worn at the finale of Yves Saint Laurent's final couture show. It was the only time the late couturier collaborated with another designer.

"So Beautiful"

CHERYL COLE has spoken for the first time about the dramatic dress she wore to the Cannes Film Festival this weekend, designed by couturier Stéphane Rolland. "The first time I saw the dress it made me take a gasp of air," Cole told us this morning. "I thought it was so beautiful and I loved that it was so chic, yet dramatic. I feel extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to wear it. It was like a work of art and surprisingly comfortable to wear." Rolland - who has dressed the Vogue cover girl several times before, as well as stars including Beyoncé Knowles and Rihanna - was equally enamoured with the sight of Cole in the dress. "Cheryl Cole always pulls it off," he said. "She has never looked anything short of immaculate. For this year's appearance at Cannes, I chose a glorious gown with a feathered tail to emphasise her silhouette. Like an exotic bird, feathers would swish with every step. Cheryl is a delight to dress, and to my team and me, she's our British darling."

Princess Freja

FREJA BEHA ERICHSEN may be the edgy, grungy beauty of the modelling world, but she was happy to transform herself into a princess for the Valentino Valentina fragrance campaign. I never have a problem switching from my day-to-day style to another 'world' - it's my job." As the face of the fragrance - a sweet, floral scent with undertones of truffle - the Danish model stars in a television advert, which sees her wandering through the streets of Rome in a ruffled Valentino dress. "Shooting the ad was like being in an Italian film!

The paparazzi were calling out at me, and I loved the locations we shot in… it was so enjoyable to do something different, like acting," she revealed to Teen Vogue. "I don't worry too much about the way I look. I do know that when you're uncomfortable, you act differently. So I always just try to be myself." The actress also revealed the secret behind her beautiful skin, citing "a lot of fruit, for vitamins," as a necessity in her diet.

Part For Sale

Updated Tuesday May 22, 12.08pm: Karl Lagerfeld is teaming up with movie mogul Harvey Weinstein to create the ultimate lot for amfAR's upcoming Cinema Against AIDS gala auction: a part in the duo's next film. Weinstein will produce and Lagerfeld will direct a short film starring the highest bidder, the New York Post reports, and the prize will be up for grabs to the highest bidder at the event at the Hotel du Cap-Eden Roc in Cap d'Antibes this Thursday. As well as the auction, the event will feature a fashion show by former French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld - and is bound to be attended by fashion's most glamorous stars. Updated Tuesday May 22, 11.46am: Prada debuted a short film, directed by Roman Polanski, at Cannes last night.

Entitled A Therapy, the feature stars Vogue cover girl Helena Bonham Carter and Ben Kingsley - who plays Bonham Carter's therapist but, after becoming bored of his patient's stories, finds himself somewhat obsessed with her purple Prada coat. "When I was asked to shoot a short movie for Prada, I did not think that I could really be myself," said Polanski. "The reality is that, in the total freedom I was given, I had the opportunity to reunite my favourite group of people on set and just have fun. The chance to dwell on what the fashion world represents nowadays and the fact that it is accompanied by so many stereotypes is fascinating and at the same time a bit upsetting, but you definitely cannot ignore it. It's very refreshing to know that there are still places open to irony and wit and, for sure, Prada is one of them." Updated Monday May 21, 9.11am: He may be a juror at the Cannes Film Festival now, but designer Jean Paul Gaultier has revealed that there was a time when he couldn't even get in to the prestigious event.

Power Players

JENNIFER LOPEZ has been named the world's most powerful star in 2012, replacing Lady Gaga who held last year's top spot in Forbes' annual Celebrity Power 100 List. In addition to her lucrative singing career, Lopez has landed further headlines this year with her Kohl's clothing line and fragrances and through her work as a judge on American Idol. She also went through a high-profile divorce from dancer Marc Anthony, who she was married to for seven years. The pair have two children together. Other names to make the chart include Oprah, who came second; Justin Bieber, who came third; Rihanna who came fourth; and Lady Gaga at number five. Angelina Jolie came in at 13, Beyoncé at 16, Jennifer Aniston at 16, followed by Adele at 24 and Brad Pitt at 28. The only models to make the list are Gisele at 61, Kate Moss at 94 and Victoria's Secret Angel Adriana Lima at 100. Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker made 86th position, while fellow actress Kristen Stewart came in at 43. The list includes film and television actors and personalities, models, athletes, authors, musicians and comedians - and measures entertainment-related earnings and media visibility (exposure in print, television, radio and online), as well as each individual's social media power by their presence on Facebook and Twitter.

World Of Temperley

TEMPERLEY LONDON is opening its first ever flagship store in London's Mayfair this November. The six-floor Georgian space will be situated on Bruton Street, also the home of Matthew Williamson, Stella McCartney and Maison Martin Margiela. "It just felt the right time to enter a new phase of expansion," Temperley told us this morning. "It's an important time to be in Britain and after 10 years we felt that we really needed a flagship. The recession slowed us down a little, but we're much more solid now about our plans and the future. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time and it was important to me to be more central and to be able to show the world what we've been up do. It's nice not to feel hidden.

" The building will house a two-floor store, carrying all three Temperley collections; Temperley London, Alice by Temperley and Temperley Bridal - as well as press and wholesale showrooms and financial and ecommerce offices. Temperley opened her debut store in Notting Hill in 2002, a space that also acted as the brand's head office. Following a redesign, the boutique will now become the label's occasion dressing destination - featuring eveningwear and Temperley Bridal. "I loved Mount Street, but the building we've chosen is so beautiful and perfect for what we want to do with it," she said. "I love shopping in that area, I love the pub there and the way that Bruton Street connects to Conduit Street then Bond Street. It's a great positioning for us."

"I'm working with friend to create lots of hand-paintings," she added of the store's interior. "We'll be redesigning the rails but a lot of it will be designed from scratch. It'll have a French salon feel with a decorative twist. There will be an opening party nearer the time and a private dressing area too. I'm really so excited." In other Temperley news, fans will have the chance to meet the designer herself this Friday as she makes a store appearance at Hampshire-based boutique Moda Rosa. Visit the shop between 1 and 3pm on Friday May 18 to see her talk shoppers through her new spring/summer 2012 and pre autumn/winter 2012-13 collections. HARRODS DIAMOND JUBILEE CROWNS Crown Jewels

HARRODS is celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee by displaying a selection of ballgowns and crowns created especially for the event by the likes of Mulberry, Lanvin and Tiffany & Co. Based upon the St. Edward's coronation crown, each crown reflects the designer or brand's personal style, whilst celebrating all things British. "We wanted to furnish our crown with a more contemporary feel and add a bit of fun to the occasion," said Theo Fennell of his design. "We have used our signature pink and black and the bee motif which we felt was ideal to symbolise the Queen Bee. We hope it has a sense of jolly timelessness." One stand-out design comes from De Beers, whose spectacular crown features 974 diamonds, including an impressive 73-carat diamond at the top. Chanel Show

VOGUE executive fashion director Calgary Avansino joined Karl Lagerfeld and guests including Vanessa Paradis, Tilda Swinton, Haider Ackermann and Sam Taylor-Wood for Chanel's pre-spring/summer 2013 show in Versailles - here she reports from the fashion frontline. "In a section of Versailles never normally open to the public, Chanel's pre-spring/summer 2013 show was held in an enchanted garden surrounding a maze of fountains for the models to meander. It was boiling hot with clear skies - and had everyone joking that Karl controls the weather too. "Cara Delevingne opened the show with a coloured short fringe hair piece and baby blue dress. The hair was a highlight throughout - each girl with a different sorbet hue. The feeling was a young playful Marie Antoinette - wide trousers, pantaloons, ruffles shorts, gold embroidery, and sequin-encrusted dresses - but the whole show was kept modern by thick-soled brothel creepers and great music by MIA, and a remix of Michael Jackson's Thriller. "Highlights were Tilda Swinton with Haider Ackermann (the rumoured heir to the Chanel throne); and Vanessa Paradis, there with a friend who was nearly as good looking as Johnny Depp. "There was excitement for Sam Taylor-Wood as it was her first Chanel show, and boyfriend Aaron Johnson's first fashion show. Amanda Harlech was wearing vintage Adidas sneakers and tie-dye tights under her elaborate Chanel pieces - so cool. And to end the evening, Alice Dellal's band serenaded us with the heaviest of heavy medal." Following the show, Lagerfeld spoke to VogueTV about his rock 'n' roll inspirations for the collection, his fashion crimes and why Coco Chanel was a "horror" in her later years.

The 26 year old stepped out in the glittering size 38-40 number on Monday night at the annual Met Ball, which celebrated the opening of the museum's new exhibition - Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations. The star was seen on the dance floor with her new husband, Marcus Mumford. This isn't the first time Mulligan has donated a dress for charity - she gave the Vionnet gown she wore to the 2010 BAFTAS to Oxfam in May 2010.

A Conversation Piece

Updated Wednesday May 9, 8.14am: There they are, the two of them, sitting across from one another, engaging in a thoughtful tête-à-tête about the strange circumstances that led them to this moment in time, to this particular locus where fashion and art, past and present, converge. If one didn't know better, the verbal exchange - punctuated by moments of sharp laughter or quiet rumblings foreshadowing a possible disagreement - could be shrugged off as yet another example of the enduring ladies who lunch archetype. But these aren't two society dames gossiping, it's the cinematic illusion of an encounter between fashion mavens Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada. Therein lies the premise of Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations, the latest exhibition courtesy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. Based on Miguel Covarrubias's "Impossible Interviews," a Vanity Fair column from the Thirties that chronicled fictitious dialogues between two contemporary figures with opposing ideologies, curators Harold Koda and Andrew Bolton have juxtaposed the works of Schiaparelli, from the late Twenties to the Fifties, and Prada, whose career in fashion began in the late Eighties. The museum commissioned filmmaker Baz Luhrmann to direct eight short, chatty vignettes - with Prada playing herself and Schiaparelli embodied by actress Judy Davis and using words from the designer's autobiography Shocking Life - that are interspersed in the galleries filled with apparel and accessories, hoping to shed light on the psychology that guided each of these women's métiers.

Koda and Bolton have organised the visual comparison into a trio of overarching motifs: "Waist Up/Waist Down" demonstrates Schiaparelli's focus on the upper body and Prada's with the lower, while "Ugly Chic," "Hard Chic" and "Naïf Chic" explore their philosophies of elegance. Lastly, the curators study three ways in which the designers' physical work interacts with the human form: "Classical Body," "Exotic Body," and "Surreal Body". There is a great deal of aesthetical and canonical overlap, and quotations from both subjects are plentiful throughout, giving intellectual context to the visual displays. This show lacks the visceral and emotional power that pulsed through last year's Alexander McQueen retrospective - understandably so as it's a more cerebral, less tortured affair. The works are thought-provoking and often archly clever - and are most successful when attempting to protest culturally accepted paradigms of beauty and femininity. It should be said that both women are certainly products of their respective eras, as demonstrated with Schiaparelli's jackets - which contrasted nipped waists with strong, padded shoulders and were often embellished with meticulous embroideries and ornamentations - reflecting mid-century café society, where women's legs were hidden under dining tables.

Prada, however, is known for her love of skirts, and candidly expounds on her fixation with the lower regions of the body. "It's about sex," reads one sign. "It's about making love. It's about life. It's about giving birth." Red lacquered walls serve as a backdrop for an array of Schiaparelli's finely tailored and exquisitely decorated jackets, while Prada's skirts of every length, colour, and fabrication stand nearby - a convincing mash-up. As an extension of that conceit, Koda and Bolton also showcase Prada's obsession with fantastical, whimsical footwear - chunky clogs, the infamous platform brogue-espadrille hybrid of spring/summer 2011, Lucite heels with dangling crystals - and use Schiaparelli's Surrealist headgear and imposing jewellery as suitable foils. The three "chics" - ugly, hard, and naïf - are perhaps the most interesting in theory, yet the least visually engaging. In the build-up to the show, much has been said about the ways that both women confronted, challenged, subverted, and defied the society norms of beauty. Muddy, dowdy fabrics stain the "Ugly Chic" portion, while "Hard Chic" emphasises a taut, unfussy efficiency lifted from the designs of uniforms and menswear. Utility may trump fantasy here, but there's a knowing sensitivity in these pieces, their ease is a respectful gift to women from women. "Naïf Chic" is the most compelling in its ability to simultaneously celebrate and ridicule youthful naiveté. The offerings may look childish or saccharine, but they contain an underlying implication of Lolita-esque deviance - an arresting contradiction.

Steiner - formerly managing director of Sonia Rykiel, CEO of Kenzo and president of Louis Vuitton Europe - said in a statement today that he is looking forward to the challenge. "I am thrilled to be working with Nicole, her team and Kelso Place to drive this business forward," he said today. "With the new flagship store and plans for UK and international expansion, this is a very exciting time for the brand." Updated Friday May 4, 9.03am: Nicole Farhi CEO Niki Scordi has resigned from her position, the brand announced this afternoon. The British-based label, which shows at London Fashion Week, was sold to private equity group Kelso Place Asset Management in January. "Over the past four years, we have reinforced the brand's position as an iconic British designer fashion house and launched new store concepts, international franchises and new product ranges," Niki Scordi said. "I wish the new owners, Kelso Place Asset

"We want to thank Niki for her significant contribution to the business and wish her every success," Sion Kearsey, managing partner of new owner Kelso Place, added. Updated Friday January 13, 11.12am: Nicole Farhi is on the cusp of a new wave of business expansion after private equity group Kelso Place Asset Management acquired a majority stake in the company. Kelso Place, which sold British luxury leather goods company Smythson in 2009, bought the stake from OpenGate Capital, which only acquired Farhi in 2010 for £5 million.

As with the OpenGate buyout, Kelso Place will retain Nicole Farhi as creative director and Niki Scordi as chief executive for the next phase of the expansion. Kelso Place has pledged to invest up to £15 million in to the brand over the next five years as it expands - with a particular focus on Asian growth. "This is an international growth story," Sion Kearsey, managing partner of Kelso Place, told the Financial Times. "Nicole Farhi is well represented in the UK, and currently sells in 40 countries worldwide, but the opportunity is to deepen the penetration of the brand. We get on well with the management team, and we're all agreed on where the business should go."

Who We Met

LAST night's Met Ball threw up a few sartorial surprises, as well as some more predictable choices - including plenty of guests celebrating one of the night's honourees - Miuccia Prada - by wearing Prada. Anna Wintour, Carey Mulligan, Jessica Biel, Gwyneth Paltrow, Eva Mendes, Diane Kruger, Kate Bosworth, Linda Evangelista, Mia Wasikowska, Grace Coddington, Milla Jovovich, Amber Valletta and Anne V among others chose dazzling dresses by the Italian label. Trend-wise, metallics were one of the night's biggest stories - showcased by stars including Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba, Karolina Kurkova and Camilla Belle, as well as some of the Prada lovelies - whilst stars from Rihanna and Gisele to Rosie

Huntington-Whiteley and Mary-Kate Olsen opted for simple, classic black. Voluminous feathered hems were the event's other big trend - with Beyoncé Knowles, Cate Blanchett, Diane Kruger, Florence Welch and Leighton Meester all adopting the mermaid silhouette. Cameron Diaz lent her star power to Livia Firth's Green Carpet Challenge - first launched on VOGUE.COM in 2010 - by wearing a custom-made Stella McCartney gown, made in support of the GCC. Made from organic, certified silk adorned with glass beads and crystal chain, the dress is the latest GCC gown to be worn by a star other than Livia - following Meryl Streep's appearance at the 2012 Oscars in a bespoke Lanvin dress. "Yet again the GCC has been given a window on the supply chain and incredible technical processes involved in producing fashion at this level, and Stella McCartney has allowed us to influence this process," Livia Firth said. "Our next goal is to tackle the sourcing of embellishment materials.

Who knows, this time next year every attendee at the Met Ball might be in a complete GCC gown - that's my dream!" Meanwhile, British designer Christopher Kane spoke this morning about dressing actress Shailene Woodley. "Shailene is such a beautiful and talented actress," Kane told us this morning. "When I first met her, I felt she was right to dress. She has an amazing personality and admires my work. She loved my last autumn/winter show, especially the chainmail pieces so I adapted one of the dresses from the show to be floor-length to suit the occasion. It's a very dramatic and beautiful creation." A ticket to the event costs $25,000 (£15,500) and, if all the famous faces who attended had paid to attend, the Huffington Post reports today, it would have raised over $17.5 million (£10.8 million).

Kirkwood’s Say

NICHOLAS KIRKWOOD has clarified his comments regarding the Duchess of Cambridge. Reports earlier this week suggested that the British shoe designer had criticised the royal's style - something he strongly denies. "The Duchess of Cambridge has had an important impact on the British fashion industry, both on the high fashion and high street," Kirkwood told us this morning. "Of course, there is nothing that I would like more than for her to wear my shoes. My comments have been taken out of context."

Describing himself as always having been "a bit of royalist", the designer - who was nominated for this year's BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund prize - is also showing his support for the British monarchy by launching a Jubilee-themed shoe. In other Kirkwood news, the designer opens his first New York flagship today - a move prompted by growing demand for his covetable shoes on US shores.

Supermodel In Court

Updated Friday May 4, 9.03am: Linda Evangelista is set to testify in court in Manhattan today as she goes head to head with the father of her son Augustin over child support. The child's father - French billionaire PPR chief, Francois-Henri Pinault - took the stand yesterday, and admitted that he told the supermodel that he didn't want to raise the child with her, before ending the relationship after she decided to have the child anyway.

"She told me that if I didn't want to be involved in raising the kid or stay together and be parents together, she would understand," Pinault said. "I told her that . . . I will take my responsibility." When asked to explain why he hadn't paid Evangelista any child support for the first years of his now five-year-old son's life, Pinault was unrepentant. "She didn't ask and I didn't offer," he said, the New York Daily News reports. Evangelista - who is said to be worth around $8 million - has applied for $46,000 per month in child support to cover her son's expenses. Pinault is the heir to a $11.5 billion publishing fortune. Francois-Henri Pinault in court this week as they attempt to agree child support for their five-year-old son Augustin.

The case at a Manhattan family court is expected to last four days and, if the supermodel's request is granted, could see Evangelista leave with more than $1,500 (£925) a day - $807,000 (£500,000) a year - for full-time childcare, and armed guards for her son's protection. Lawyers familiar with the city's family court told the New York Daily News today that payments for child support are generally based on the cost of raising a child, rather than the parents' incomes - meaning that it seems unlikely that the $46,000 (£28,000) per month payout for Evangelista will be granted.

Kate Moss: Hair How-To

KATE MOSS was arguably a natural choice for Vogue's Going For Gold June 2012 cover, and so her hairstyle had to be just as iconic as the issue itself. "There were two camps. We were choosing between pulling her hair back really tightly and making it really sporty - since it's the Olympics issue - and having it really glamorous to show her as the British icon she is," Malcolm Edwards - who created the look - told us. "I was really keen to create a really iconic style, but I think [photographers] Mert and Marcus wanted it pulled back. Kate was all prepped so I said 'let's put her in the clothes and see', and luckily they went with the iconic look." And, with the supermodel's hair swept dramatically to one side in retro waves, it seems Edwards achieved his goal. "She looks amazing like that, really glamorous," he said. "She was really happy with it too, it looks much harder and younger swept to one side like that. Plus it shows off those cheekbones." Here, Edwards explains exactly how he created the look: - I used all L'Oréal Professionnel products - starting with Tecni Art Volume Lift Spray Mousse at the roots, then drenching the hair in Tecni Art Pli.

Parting really low on one side added extra drama. - I then applied the Texture Expert Smooth Essence for a lovely sleek look - Kate's hair is knackered and fried and this brings it back to life - before blow-drying the hair with a round barrel brush for a smooth quality. - Still blow-drying, I created volume and movement by using a vent brush to move the hair away from the face. - Next I applied Tecni Art Constructor all over. Using a medium-sized curling iron, I began to reverse-tong the hair. This basically involves dividing the hair into sections and - starting at the parting - using the tong over the top of the first section, and then underneath the second. This creates a real Hollywood wave. If you had really natural waves like Gisele you'd be able to tong the hair in the same direction, but for fine hair like Kate's the reverse-curling works well to create movement. - Afterwards it was important to let the hair cool, clipping each section up onto the head. This is one of the most important things about styling hair - letting it cool and set so that it lasts longer. - Then I brushed the waves out, section by section, finishing with a bit of serum and Air Fix Firm Hold Spray. You could also use a fine metal comb if you wanted to, to create tension and make the look even fresher and younger. Lisa Niven

Queen Of Diamonds

THIS summer, in celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, some of the royal family's most precious diamond jewellery is set to go on display at Buckingham Palace. Following the enormously successful exhibition of the Duchess of Cambridge's wedding dress at last year's Buckingham Palace Summer Opening, the exhibition will see pieces such as the coronation necklace worn by Queen Victoria, Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother) and the current monarch displayed for the public. As well as jewels from the Queen's personal collection, there will also be pieces that she has acquired from previous monarchs. Particular highlights include a miniature crown worn by Queen Victoria - the only monarch aside from the current Queen to have reigned for 60 years or more - for her official Diamond Jubilee portrait in 1897.

Aquascutum Latest

Updated Monday May 2, 2.03pm: Aquascutum's administrators announced today that they have entered in to an exclusivity agreement with Hong Kong-based YGM Trading Limited to save the company. YGM - which controls Aquascutum's licences in Asia already - will "acquire the on-going business and assets with completion to take place by May 9, 2012," the administration company said today. "The joint administrators have been very encouraged by the significant interest shown in the business over the last two weeks and have chosen to proceed with the offer that delivers the best outcome for the creditors of Aquascutum," Geoff Rowley, joint administrator at FRP, said today. The administrators are also continuing negotiations to secure a buyer for the company's manufacturing plant in Corby, Northamptonshire, which was closed on April 19. No deadline has currently been set for this process. Updated Monday April 23, 11.52am: A host of bidders have entered the race to acquire Aquascutum, including Edinburgh Woollen Mill, Hong Kong-based company Li & Fung, menswear business Cooper and Stollbrand, and YGM Trading - the company that owns the brand in Asia - Retail Week reports today. "We understand Aquascutum's product, its customers and most importantly, what it takes to maintain, to manage and develop a profitable successful UK factory," Cooper & Stollbrand boss James Eden told The Times.

Updated Thursday April 19, 11.46am: Following its decision earlier this week to enter administration, Aquascutum has decided to close its UK manufacturing plant in Corby - due to "loss-making operations and a lack of funding" - with a loss of 115 jobs. "Whilst a difficult decision, it has been necessary in order to stem on-going losses for the business, and to protect the positions of the 135 remaining employees," a spokesperson for the adminstrators said this morning. "We plan to provide appropriate assistance to all affected employees, including liaising with Jobcentre plus and helping with claims to the Redundancy Payments Service. All head office and retail operations across the UK and international high street, concession and outlet stores are operating as usual at present." The company is in the process of looking for a buyer, and is hopeful that a suitable investor will be found soon. "We have received a high level of interest from potential purchasers from around the world, with our focus now upon progressing discussions for a sale of the Aquascutum brand and assets," the spokesperson added.

Next Top Naomi

NAOMI CAMPBELL may have settled her long-running feud with Tyra Banks years ago, but the two are set to go head to head again when Campbell becomes a mentor on her very own modelling show. The US programme - called The Face - will follow a similar format to Banks' wildly successful Next Top Model franchise, and will be operated by NBC Universal, which also produces The Voice. Campbell will be responsible for "moulding, nurturing and transforming contestants" alongside two other supermodel mentors who are yet to be revealed.

Campbell was linked with a mentoring role on Britain's Next Top Model in 2009, but the show was eventually helmed by Elle Macpherson. The news comes just days after Banks revealed she had parted ways with her three fellow panellists on America's Next Top Model - Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and J Alexander - reportedly in a bid to spice up the show's format.
