Chanel Show

VOGUE executive fashion director Calgary Avansino joined Karl Lagerfeld and guests including Vanessa Paradis, Tilda Swinton, Haider Ackermann and Sam Taylor-Wood for Chanel's pre-spring/summer 2013 show in Versailles - here she reports from the fashion frontline. "In a section of Versailles never normally open to the public, Chanel's pre-spring/summer 2013 show was held in an enchanted garden surrounding a maze of fountains for the models to meander. It was boiling hot with clear skies - and had everyone joking that Karl controls the weather too. "Cara Delevingne opened the show with a coloured short fringe hair piece and baby blue dress. The hair was a highlight throughout - each girl with a different sorbet hue. The feeling was a young playful Marie Antoinette - wide trousers, pantaloons, ruffles shorts, gold embroidery, and sequin-encrusted dresses - but the whole show was kept modern by thick-soled brothel creepers and great music by MIA, and a remix of Michael Jackson's Thriller. "Highlights were Tilda Swinton with Haider Ackermann (the rumoured heir to the Chanel throne); and Vanessa Paradis, there with a friend who was nearly as good looking as Johnny Depp. "There was excitement for Sam Taylor-Wood as it was her first Chanel show, and boyfriend Aaron Johnson's first fashion show. Amanda Harlech was wearing vintage Adidas sneakers and tie-dye tights under her elaborate Chanel pieces - so cool. And to end the evening, Alice Dellal's band serenaded us with the heaviest of heavy medal." Following the show, Lagerfeld spoke to VogueTV about his rock 'n' roll inspirations for the collection, his fashion crimes and why Coco Chanel was a "horror" in her later years.
