Mini Cindy

YOU might think that being known as a "mini" version of another famous model wouldn't be a compliment to an aspiring catwalker, but when the model in question is Cindy Crawford, it's hard to see it as an insult. Fellow American Kendra Spears is instantly recognisable by her Crawford-style upper lip mole, a comparison she has frequently said that she's flattered by, but there's more to the designer favourite than being "little Cindy". She studied sociology at Portland State University, for a start, and plays piano like the rest of her musically-gifted family. She made her name as runner-up in the famous Ford Models Supermodel of the World competition in 2008, despite - or maybe because of - wearing braces at the time, and has since graced catwalks for Chanel, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani and more. Her catwalk debut came in New York in September 2008 during the spring/summer 2009 shows - before she walked in shows including Gucci, Hermès and Valentino in Milan and Paris. She soon came to the attention of Miuccia Prada, who enlisted her as one of the faces of her autumn/winter 2009 campaign and - as always where Mrs Prada is involved - the industry took note. She was chosen by Emmanuelle Alt to star in a spoof Wham video used to launch French Vogue's new website earlier this year, and has appeared in campaigns for some of the industry's biggest brands - from Calvin Klein to Emporio Armani.

Prada's Man

PRADA's shows alway bring an interesting model face to the fore, and this season's menswear show was no exception; heralding the return of male model John Pearson - the only man to appear with the supermodels in George Michael's Freedom video - to the catwalk. Last seen walking for Valentino more than a decade ago when he was the face of the brand, Pearson was understandably more than a little nervous to be back. "There were a few nerves, but good nerves. It really felt great to be in the show," the model - represented by Premier - told us. "My pal John Rawlinson, another old boy, was also in the show and we share the same birthday, June 24 - which of course was the day of the show. So it was fun... and I got my eyebrows bleached too. The best moment was as we all were about to go on, the head menswear designer actually took the moment to check the models, offer a little word of encouragement and direction, but mostly thank them for being in the show! I've never seen, heard, or experienced this before and he did it with genuine respect and appreciation - for me, that was the highlight, pure class and humility. Bless him, a lovely man." A television show about his incredible career, as well as another high-profile fashion job, is on the cards - but not until he enjoys a well-deserved holiday. "London, Yorkshire and Devon for my in-laws' 50th anniversary," he said. "Followed by some more work."

Milan Menswear Begins

MILAN Menswear Fashion Week kicks off tomorrow, starting with its most highly-anticipated show - Jil Sander, when the label's eponymous founder will show her first collection since she decided to return to her brand in February this year. It is the third time the German designer has worked at the house since its beginnings in 1973. Sander will be followed by Marni, Dolce & Gabbana (although, sadly, we've been told that the label's muse, David Gandy, won't be making a catwalk appearance this season), Burberry and Versace on Saturday, while Sunday's highlights will include Bottega Veneta, Calvin Klein Collection, Prada and Roberto Cavalli. With Prada having recruited last season's star catwalk models (including Gary Oldman, Willem Dafoe and Jamie Bell) as its current campaign faces, we'll be watching carefully to see who makes this season's show line-up. The schedule will continue on Monday, with new spring/summer 2013 offerings from Emporio Armani, Gucci, Etro and Alexander McQueen. Tuesday will wrap up the week's collections with Giorgio Armani and Marc Jacobs, before the action moves to Paris on Wednesday. For the first time ever, menswear season began in London this year, with the inaugural London Collections: Men last weekend. As well as being an excuse to gaze at the world's most handsome men, the menswear shows are a chance to predict what we might expect from this autumn's womenswear collections - so make sure you stay tuned to see the latest offerings as soon as they arrive. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook to make sure you don't miss out on this weekend's key shows.

Rosie's Role

ROSIE HUNTINGTON-WHITELEY will star in the forthcoming Mad Max film along fellow Vogue cover girl Charlize Theron, we can confirm today. Her publicist has verified the rumours - which began when the model was pictured in Sydney, reportedly auditioning for the role - confirming that the Transformers star will make her next film appearance in the relaunched franchise later this year. Theron is already getting ready for the role, and has shaved her head for the part. The George Miller-directed film, entitled Mad Max: Fury Road, does not have a confirmed release date but will also star Tom Hardy and Nicholas Hoult. Huntington-Whiteley is rumoured to be set to play one of five wives alongside fellow model Abbey Lee Kershaw, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keogh and Adelaide Clemens.

To Be Blunt

EMILY BLUNT would like to feature in the Devil Wears Prada sequel, following in the footsteps of her former co-star Meryl Streep - who yesterday declared she'd consider reprisingher role as the fierce Miranda Priestly even though she'd "have to lose the f***ing weight". Although a follow-up film has not yet been confirmed, Lauren Weisberger's new book, Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, is expected to arrive in stores in April next year. "Did she actually say that?" laughed Blunt of Streep's admission. "I feel the same as her and yes I think I would do it. We all were told to go on these skinny diets for the first time, but I'd be up for it." Weisbergers's new story will detail what happened to hardworking Andy Sachs following her departure from Runway (inspired by life at US Vogue), her new job as editor of a top bridal magazine and, naturally, we'll see her bump into her former boss, Miranda Priestly, once again. Blunt, who is currently promoting new comedy The Five-Year Engagement, played the part of icy fashion assistant Emily in the 2006 Devil Wears Prada film. And she says that, although the tale may have dramatised certain aspects, it does bare a marked resemblance to her real-life experiences of the fashion world. "There are definitely similarities," she told us. "There is that ferocious, watchful nature of the industry; that catty competitiveness between people; and also those stress levels that you see in the film - they're very real in the industry too. I have a few friends who work for fashion magazines and it isn't that dissimilar. I went to the Met Ball with Francesco Costa from Calvin Klein last month and he was telling me how non-stop it all is. It's just collection after collection - you have to be in creative overdrive all the time. It's all so personal too, in the same way the film industry is. You have to be very thick-skinned. Films are so subjective as is fashion." The Five-Year Engagement is released on June 22.

Taking Karl Down

BETH DITTO has reaffirmed her controversial thoughts on Karl Lagerfeld, whose sanity she questioned last month. The Gossip singer previously criticised the Chanel legend over comments he made about Adele's weight, stating that he is not the "be-all-end-all-of what he does" and described how he used to be "a really fat, eccentric dude". "Now, there's this weird thing with Karl Lagerfeld, which I literally just learned about an hour ago - people are like, 'So you called him old and skinny?' And I'm like, 'Well, what is he? Young and fat?' He's not," she said. "I have no desire to stay super-thin, super-perfect." While she won't be looking to Lagerfeld for style advice any time soon, Ditto cited a surprising musical figurehead as her fashion role model. "When I grow up, I want to look like Patti Smith, that's how I feel exactly - moustache and everything, that sounds great," she told Gloss.

Cole Control

DESIGNER Kenneth Cole is poised to retake complete control of his namesake label, after the company's board approved his offer to acquire the 54 per cent of shares that he doesn't currently own at a rate of $15.25 a share. Cole will acquire the remaining shares through KCP Holdco Inc, a company that he formed for the purposes of the acquisition. Analysts told WWD earlier this month that the company is likely to fare better as a private entity than a public one, but couldn't rule out a repeat IPO further down the line when markets improve. Cole - who is known for his philanthropy, having founded AIDS charity amfAR in 1985, as well as his controversial marketing campaigns - launched a new high-end label in March, repositioning the brand in the market.

Californian YSL

YVES SAINT LAURENT creative director Hedi Slimane will base himself in his creative studio in Los Angeles, rather than the house's Parisian headquarters Slimane, who took the brand's reins in March this year, relocated to LA in 2007 after he left Dior Homme where he pursued art and photography. Fittings will still take place in Paris and YSL ateliers will continue to work from the label's Avenue George V offices, WWD reports. While it is traditional for creative directors of French houses to live in Paris, Slimane follows in the relocation footsteps ofPhoebe Philo, who helms Paris-based Celine from London.

Duchess' Auction

TWO straw hats worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, before she joined the royal family, are expected to fetch between £1,000 and £1,500 each as they go under the hammer for the Passion for Fashion auction, hosted by Kerry Taylor Auctions. The Duchess hired the hats - both black and embellished with feathers - to wear to Prince William's Order of the Garter presentation in June 2008, and the wedding of event rider Harry Meade in October 2010. Hire receipts and copies of the milliner's diary entries marking Catherine's appointments will be available with each hat, which are made by Philip Somerville and Aurora. The auction will take place at Kerry Taylor's auction room in Bermondsey on June 26 at 2pm. Last year, the auction house also sold the sheer net dress worn by Catherine in a St Andrew's charity fashion show, which brought in £78,000.
