Back to School Clothes for Girls: Designer Girl

For the first day of school, skip the been-there-done-that jeans and tees and dress her up in something she'll flip for. I love this look. The dress, by Kico Kids is tailored perfectly and is everything a designer dress should be--well made, beautifully fitted, stylish and unique. And, it looks great paired with the soft, long-sleeved tee, also by Kico Kids. The tee has an enlarged, houndstooth pattern on it and would be super paired with a pair of jeans for a more casual, yet still stylish look.

Ellie said, "I really like this dress. It looks like a uniform, only prettier. And the blue shirt matches too."

Ellie's adorable shoes by Pediped are just plain fun. They are a beautiful pair of chocolate brown, classic Mary Janes, jazzed up with a sparkling of yellow, cream and metallic pink polka-dots. Pediped is one of my favorite lines of kids' and toddler shoes. They are always sturdy, stylish and comfy--a winning combo.

And to top the look off, Ellie chose a navy and white hair clip by No Slippy Hair Clippy. As they say, the accessories make the look!

Fall Fashion Trends for Girls: Updated Preppy Perfect

The preppy look never goes away, it just gets refined. For Back to School 2011, keep her preppy look simple and modern. Choose preppy classics such as polos and sweater dresses in a color scheme she loves. But, instead of piling on the standby, preppy items, pick and choose one or two and mix them with other items from her wardrobe for a more streamlined, modern look.

Brenna put together a winning look with this lovely soft-pink and heather-grey, argyle sweater dress by Vineyard Vines. She paired it up with an adorable, small handbag that compliments her dress perfectly. Instead of going for classic preppy shoes such as Keds or loafers, she chose a modern pair of black ballet flats. Her B2S look is on point, perfect and so easy to put together with only three major items.

5 Things a Grown Woman Should Never Wear

I hate overalls. Period. But every couple of years someone decides they need to be part of our wardrobe again (uh, thanks Madewell.)

As far as I'm concerned, there are limits to what grown women should wear (and, no, I don't think you should put a time stamp on miniskirts -- if you've still got it, flaunt it.)

Read through the list, then chime in with your Grown Woman Don'ts.

SAG Awards 2012 Makeup: Maya Rudolph

Makeup artist Molly R. Stern made over comedy maven Maya Rudolph for the SAG Awards red carpet last night. Here, the deets straight from Molly.

" I prepped Maya's skin with jurlique rose water spray and a light massage with Revive Serum Protectif. Next I used a sheer wash of Chantecaille foundation to even out her skin still wanting very much her freckles to shine through.

Next I warmed up the apples of her cheeks with HOURGLASS illume in bronze light and then added some LAURA MERCIER cream blush in Blaze over top to add a flushed finish.

For her eyes, I first highlighted her lid with LAURA MERCIER metallic creme eye color in rose gold. Next I defined and fused out a very black smudge of YSL faux cils in deep black on both the top and bottom line. Then I added a sparkling aubergine color over top for an extra hit of glisten. For her lashes I used several coats of film noir mascara by HOURGLASS plus an extra coat of film noir lash lacquer.

For her lips I used TARTE cosmetics in enchanted."

I thought she looked radiant. What say you about Maya Rudolph's 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards makeup?

Watch This | Calendar Guys

With 2012 being both a lucky Year of the Dragon and a leap, it’s not surprising that many of the timepieces introduced at the recent Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) watch fair in Geneva gave major consideration to the calendar — the “annual” versus “perpetual” figuring prominently in the mechanical innovations and aesthetics of many of the exhibit’s most exciting timekeepers. A quick refresher on the functions: an annual calendar on an automatic watch usually needs to be adjusted once per year, at the end of February, to adjust for the month’s fewer days; a perpetual calendar accounts for February’s 28 days and its odd 29th, and needs only a manual nudge every 100 years or so, far beyond the average watch wearer’s needs. Clunky desktop date keepers, meet the competition.

Work Wear | Brook Klausing

For the next installment in our series on occupational uniforms, T visited with the landscape designer Brook Klausing to see how he dresses for work every day.

As the owner and creative director of Brook Landscape, Brook Klausing gets his clothes dirty on an almost daily basis. But that’s not to say he doesn’t think about what he wears as much as, if not more than, the fashion folk. “When I meet with new clients, I want to make sure they understand what they are going to get,” he says. “What I wear should say that their garden will be timeless, clean and organic with a modern undertone.” Still, moving between the office and urban landscapes requires a uniform of “rugged clothes that hold up to the abuse” — waxed jackets, dark pants that obscure hand-wipes, and boots that can be worn year-round and that are high enough on the ankle to keep the dirt out.

Klausing stands by the sweatshirt, like the one he’s wearing here from the new Japanese-designed brand 8.15 August Fifteenth, for being the most versatile piece in his work wardrobe. Worn over a collared shirt, it has the put-together look of a knit sweater, but it’s much more durable and easier to wash, and it’s always shovel-ready. “I never want to look too pretty to jump in and make something happen,” he says.

The Get | Dolce & Gabbana Bag

“Often the attention to details makes all the difference,” says the Dolce & Gabbana co-designer Stefano Gabbana, referring to the design of his and Domenico Dolce’s newest spring bag, which hits stores this week. Structured and clean, with a handle made for elbow-hooking and a padlock made of gold metal (speaking of details), the style comes in three sizes and is available in a variety of materials, from aluminum foil to straw and python, and in a range of gorgeous colors (pastels, primaries) and finishes (metallic and matte). For the minimalist, the classic leather style suits best. For the quirky carrier, a metallic picnic purse version is perfect. And, for the vintage-inspired, a dainty woven version like this one in dusty rose does the trick. Pick your poison.

A fashion revolution?

Don't let the title of today's story fool you, devoted WWW followers. We will not spend this Accessory Report discussing the latest on Conor Oberst's band-though it's certainly tempting-but rather, the fact that vibrant eyewear is a key accessory this season! From fluorescent pink (Alexa Chung) to tangerine (Jessica Biel) to luscious red (Jessica Alba), bright frames are all the rage right now-and understandably so! Whether they're cheering up your winter wardrobe or adding quirky flair to a fancy day look, bold shades offer an easy way to make your wardrobe a little more on-trend. And with so many colors and styles to choose from, you'll surely find a pair that not only flatters your face, but suits your personality too!

When it comes to this season's best accessories, Bottega Veneta S/S 12 definitely has our vote. Earlier this month, we gushed about designer Tomas Maier's futuristic geometric earrings, and now we're head over heels for his brilliant take on bright sunnies. The fashion house's Red Brown BV Eyewear ($495, 212.371.5511), shown above, are an artful blend of retro glam and modern sophistication. The glossy, orangey-red rims put a new spin on the iconic, '60s-inspired Clubmaster style, giving the sunglasses a truly cool and luxe look.

Of course, the shades at Bottega Veneta aren't the only fabulous bright sunglasses out there! In fact, we've spotted some pretty fantastic shades on your favorite tastemakers, including Alexa Chung and Gwen Stefani. Chung, snapped here at the Valentino S/S 12 show, selected Cutler and Gross for Cacharel's enviable sunglasses, which we're sad to report are currently sold out. We must applaud Chung on her eyewear pick, as the contemporary feel of the fluorescent pink color and rounded shape suit her sensibilities perfectly. A few months later in Los Angeles, Stefani also opted for rounded frames, albeit with a more cat-eye shape and sky blue hue. The singer/designer stepped out wearing Stella McCartney's Round Frame Sunglasses ($225), a lovely choice that added a subtle pop of color to her neutral outfit.

If you had a more classic shape in mind, surely Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, and Gwyneth Paltrow's bright choices will inspire you. Biel went for a statement-making finish in Los Angeles earlier this month with the help of The Row's Burnt Orange Sunglasses with Leather Wrapped Temples ($442), while a day earlier, Alba complemented the hue of her cozy knit scarf with Thierry Lasry's red Obsessy Sunglasses ($375). Additionally, we're also quite fond of the Ray-Ban Cats 5000 Sunglasses ($135) Gwyneth Paltrow wore while running errands in New York a few weeks ago. Contrasted with the rough-and-tumble vibe of her MiH distressed leather jacket, the pink aviators inject an element of cool femininity into her off-duty look.

Fortunately, the bright eyewear options don't stop there! After a little online browsing of our own, we found shades every bit as stylish as the aforementioned styles. Over at American Apparel, the Jody Sunglasses ($35) come in a striking electric blue color, which would look awesome worn with an equally vibrant dress come spring! Love a cat-eye shape? We do too, which is why we simply can't resist Urban Outfitters' Extreme Cat Eye Sunglasses ($16) in the sprightly candy-apple red hue-the price is right too! Not surprisingly, we're also crazy for Karen Walker's quirky Soul Club Sunglasses ($220) in Yellow. These original shades have fashion-forward girl written all over them. And last, but certainly not least, we'd like to direct you to Matthew Williamson's splurge-worthy Curved-Square Sunglasses ($369). Sure, they're a bit of an investment, but they're so cool you'll never want to take them off. High-fashion sunglasses with some charisma? Now that's a bright idea!-Jessica Baker

A fashion revolution?

By far the most exciting thing I saw last week during the couture in Paris wasn’t couture at all, but a website that launches today: www.honestby.com. The brainchild of Belgian designer Bruno Pieters, late of Hugo Boss, it is the most subversive etail initiative I have seen. I think it has the power to transform the fashion industry. Really. You know I don’t say these things lightly. Indeed, my natural instinct whenever a fashion person tells me they have something “revolutionary” happening is to roll my eyes and grimace. But then, Pieters didn’t tell me this – I thought it up all on my own when I saw his project.
Why?

Because this site, which will sell a collection of 56 pieces for men and women (only 20 items of each style will be made, including different sizes) by Mr Pieters, and then start offering collections by guest designers in three months (he wouldn’t tell me who they were), is transparent, and mostly sustainable. Let me say that again: transparent financially and in terms of manufacturing.

Since I know this is hard to imagine, let me explain. You go to “collection” and, say, you click on a coat. Under the section “material information” you will find the description of material used, its composition, weight, yarn or piece-dyed, the origin of the raw material, who spun it, who wove it, whether it is organic, if so, what certificate it has earned (and what said certificate means), and a website for the supplier – and you will find this for the fabric, the zipper, the lining, the trim, the label, the buttons, the thread and so on.
Meanwhile, under “price information”: you will find out the cost per metre of the fabric, how much was ordered, how much was used, how much labour was involved, what the mark-up was, and how the profit was used.

In other words, by the time you press “buy” you will know exactly what you are paying for. Zounds!
Nothing like this has been done in my living memory. Fashion, especially high-end fashion, is a business built on opacity: things cost what they cost because of ephemeral matters like “heritage” and “hand-work” and “brand equity” and the less the consumer knows about the literal value of these, the better off the brands are (and the more they can charge). Though he says most of the suppliers and designers he approached were enthusiastic, some were “upset, and said we shouldn’t communicate on this.”

It is precisely this attitude that Mr Pieters wants to change – he thinks it breeds consumer mistrust – and why he wanted absolute clarity in his own brand. Indeed, he says if orders go up and he achieves economies of scale, his prices will come down.

It seems to me this has the potential to be a real game-changer in fashion, because if consumers get used to having this sort of information available, they could start demanding it from other brands. Once information is out there in the world, it’s impossible to get it back. And then – goodness me. I can barely contain myself.

Why not buy all your clothes from 99p Stores?

High street staple 99p Stores is being bought out for £60m. Before their new owners jack up the prices, we decided to take advantage of the fashion bargains available.

It was a challenge. There was going to be a photoshoot. We wouldn't be allowed to wear any of our own clothes, only things we'd purchased from the nearest 99p Store (which turned out to be in Balham, if you're interested). People were going to see us. We didn't want to look silly. Well, not sex offenders register silly.

Where fashion goes to die

Have you ever seen the clothing section in a 99p Store? It's a grim affair. It feels like scarf purgatory. Whilst the website promises such wonders as ladies' coats with hoods, flip-flops, and maybe even shorts, the shop itself failed to deliver and we found ourselves amidst a sea of discount winter gear. Still, we've done worse things for money1, so we quickly fashioned ourselves an outfit using only grotty cold weather accessories.

The ensemble went as follows:

Neon orange arm warmers, neon orange gloves, neon orange and black leg warmers
(99p x 3 = £2.97)

"That heel thing makes it look classier than it really is" one colleague remarked

Leg warmers are fashionable, right? Sure. They must be. We chose wisely, and rather than going for clashing colours which might make us look stupid, we co-ordinated and chose neon orange as a bold, in-your-face statement. Other available colours included neon green, neon pink, neon yellow, and neon white (somehow a thing), giving us the impression that the 80's had been sick all over them.

Two scarves: one black, one white
(99p x 2 = £1.98)
Not sure what the fireball on the tags indicates, aside from "Beware: this scarf is a fire hazard"

In an attempt to calm down the vibrancy of our limb-coverings, we plumped for a more restrained choice of scarves. Not to keep our necks warm, you understand – we had a plan for that, as you'll see later – but instead to cover ourselves up. It was becoming rapidly clear that the shop didn't sell tops, and the only trousers they had on sale were designed for 8-year-old girls. Trying to squeeze into a pair of those, and then posting the pictures on the internet, was an entirely different kettle of fish.

The scarves could be made into a sarong-type affair, or re-purposed into Braveheart-style chest wraps. Anything to hide as much of our alabaster flesh from the masses as possible, really. We bought two, and moved on.

Dappy-style hat, skull motif, white and blue, only mild staining
(99p)
See? It's not bad. Shame about the... 'stuff' on it, though

This actually didn't look awful, which made a change. It came with a 'no extra charge' slightly unsettling blood-like stain on the side, indicating that it's either been ripped off the head of a man beaten unconscious, or someone got jam on it at some point in the past. Neither explanation excited us.

'Scarf thing'
(99p)
This is what teddy bear guts must look like

What is this? A dreamcatcher? A cat toy? A cat caught in a dreamcatcher? We don't know. It was labelled as a 'scarf', and it shares a lot of functions with a scarf (it goes round your neck, it generates a feeling of warmth), but it's not. It's just not. Look at it. What is that? Who would look at that and think 'Hey, that's what I need to spend my money on!' Lunatics, that's who.2

Red leather-esque belt
(99p)

It wasn't just fake leather – it was as though the makers brought someone in to describe leather to them second-hand, and then made the belt solely off that evidence. It came with a lot of superfluous holes in it, which we liked, and in an snazzy red shade that complimented our hair. We went for a Large belt which had “36 inches” written on it, although that was the actual length of the belt and not the waist size it was intended for. Even resident skinny bloke Rob McGarr couldn't get it round his waist, so we had no chance of doing so. We went for an over-the-shoulder-look to compliment our scarf-heavy outfit.

Fireman's 'outfit', plastic
(99p)
"Hello, ladies. Aroused yet?"

99p Stores have, believe it or not, a Valentine's Day section. That's a grim February the 14th if ever there was one, no? It comes with “sexy” costumes for girls, inflatable boob pillows, misspelt messages of love scrawled on plastic hearts, and... this. According to the packet, this is an outfit for a fireman, but that's clearly a lie.

Indeed, the packaging actually states that you should keep it away from naked flame, and that it's just for fun. Glad to hear they've got their priorities sorted out. But they're right – this isn't intended for use in fighting fires. It's not really intended for use in erotica, either, as all the items within – red hot pants, black braces, reflective velcro cuffs and a hat, of sorts - are fashioned from cheap, uncomfortable plastic. Like fetish gear that's not actually anyone's fetish.

Still, the hot pants basically qualified as trousers, so we gamely popped the outfit it in our basket. All told, wearing them looked better than just standing there with our balls hanging out, so you should be thankful.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Watcher's Guide, 1998 (First Edition), slight damage
(99p)
Oh David Boreanaz, we'll always love you. And Sarah Michelle Gellar, she's alright too

We had a quid spare, so we had a look over the literature section to find something worth spending our hard-earned cash on. In addition to some truly awful-looking PC games and a tome in which Carol Vorderman instructs you on how to lose cellulite, we found this almost entirely undamaged copy of the companion to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's sort of charming, in a 'shopping after the apocalypse' sort of way.

Inexplicably this was printed in 1998, which means that this book has spent the last 14 years unsold. Just, you know, sitting there. Waiting to be bought. We picked it up and leafed through on the tube on the way to our photoshoot –

Put it all together and...
Did you know Alyson Hannigan is, in fact, “very outgoing, unlike her character Willow” and has a Japanese Kanji tattooed on her lower back? Well, you do now

Yeah. We're fairly impressed with ourselves, considering what we had to work with. The scarves are held in place by a bulldog clip, and everything else is just sort of... hanging off. One other thing – boxer shorts, barely visible, are model's own. We didn't want to have to wear those plastic hot pants without some protection. We're not sorry about that.

So, can you dress yourself for a tenner using only a 99p Store? Yes. Technically. Legally, we are “dressed” in that we wouldn't be arrested for breaking indecent exposure laws. In every other sense of the word: no. Maybe if we tried some other shops, perhaps, but not like this. Not like this.

From the fashion cupboard: statement scarves

A statement scarf can be a wardrobe's best friend, so don't do scarves by halves cautions Kate Rose Morris.

For years it was handbags and shoes that held the prestigious position of status symbol, but now the humble scarf seems to have taken on the role.

It started with Victoria Beckham, who realised early on that she could hide her face from the papparrazzi while simultaneously asserting her status with a coveted Louis Vuitton Stephen Sprouse leopard print scarf. Kate Moss and the Olsen twins quickly caught on with a more rock-chick style, draping Alexander McQueen skull-print chiffon scarves over their leather jackets.

Shop: statement scarves
In the daily life of us mere mortals, scarves now play a much bigger part than just something to stop you catching a chill. This is an accessory that has grown so much in status that Liberty has devoted an entire room to them in all their forms, whether silk, jersey or wool.
A tonal outfit in grey or black can be lifted and enlivened with a large cotton scarf in a popping colour. Can't afford a Jonathan Saunders dress? Dip a toe into the brand instead with an oversized scarf in one of his season's unmistakeable prints. Or if you're worried about your outfit looking a touch too trendy, soften it by layering a Marks & Spencer plain jersey scarf over the look. Indeed, a scarf is your wardrobe's best friend.

Paris Haute Couture: Valentino spring/summer 2012

The Valentino couture collection reminded us what has been missing for so long in fashion: charm.

Watching Wednesday night's Valentino show in Paris in the 19th century mansion once occupied by the Rothschilds made me realise what has been missing for so long in fashion: charm.

Perhaps it's due a come-back. "The Artist", a film short on words and action but brimming with old-fashioned values of courtesy and open hearted optimism, is, with the exception of a few confused punters in Liverpool, seducing all who see it. Wallis Simpson - bear with me on this one - is once more proving her mettle as an enduring source of fascination. She may - or according to Madonna may not - have been a woman with dubious values, but by most accounts she knew how to charm.
Dior couture: job done for Bill Gaytten?

In this - and perhaps other areas - she has something in common with Marie Antoinette, one of the muses for the Valentino collection, which is nowadays designed not by the Maestro himself, who has retired to tend his famous tan and infamous pugs, but by Pier-Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri.
A woman with too much time and money on her hands may seem a rather lack-lustre starting point for anyone hoping to make clothes with topical relevance. But muses work in mysterious ways and out of this one Piccioli and Chiuri spun clothes of extraordinary lightness and grace (another word you don't see often in the modern fashion canon).

Glamorous warriors storm Paris as Versace kicks off Couture Fashion Week
Gauzy Chantilly lace the colour of milk or clotted cream was sprinkled with silver beading, washed-out flowers prints were veiled under a layer of tulle, toile de jouys (when did you last see one of those used in grown-up clothing) were whooshed up into frothy ballgowns.

Even the shoes - lace slippers and heeled pumps- looked sweet rather than sexy.
Paris Haute Couture: Chanel spring/summer 2012
Backstage, where it's still, just, possible to navigate around the scrum that congregates around the attending celebrities (in this instance Cameron Diaz) and touch the clothes, I did. They were almost weightless - quite a feat given all the embroidery, passmenterie and beading expected in a couture collection. It may have had a nostalgic demure look, but there was something futuristic about the technical engineering. But what was most striking were the necklines: many of them round - not overly prim, but not remotely revealing. "The time for a woman to reveal all she has is definitely over," said Maria Grazia Chiuri. "It feels much stronger to hold back".
If anything can edge the rock chicks and the bling freaks and the cleavage and thigh addicts (charmingly) to one side, this collection is it - the best of the week.

Jenny Packham to launch debut collection for Debenhams

Jenny Packham, one of the Duchess of Cambridge's favourite designers is to create an affordable capsule collection for high street retailer Debenhams.

She's conquered both royalty and Hollywood with her heavily embellished gowns, and now Jenny Packham has her sights set on the great British high street.

The north London-based designer, who shows her collections during New York Fashion Week, is joining the likes of Roksanda Ilincic, Jonathan Saunders and Preen in creating a purse-friendly capsule collection for retailer Debenhams.
Meet the new generation of red carpet designers
A hit with the brigade of A-list Kates - both Beckinsale and Winslet have taken to the carpet wearing Jenny Packham over the past fortnight - the designer's most famous customer has to be the most ubiquitous Kate of all: the Duchess of Cambridge.
The Duchess has championed Packham's feminine designs on several high-profile occasions recently, choosing show-stopping gowns for charity events in London, and more daytime-friendly dresses while on her state visit to North America.
See Kate Middleton's fashion hits and misses
Packham, who is also feted for her luxurious bridalwear, will launch a range of occasionwear and jewellery for Debenhams in the spring. Stay tuned for a first look of what will undoubtedly be the most covetable designer collaboration of the year so far.

Paris Haute Couture spring/summer 2012: Jean Paul Gaultier's tribute to Amy Winehouse

Enfant terrible of French fashion, Jean Paul Gaultier, chose a rather unlikely subject for his couture show in Paris.

Hard to believe it's already been six months since Amy Winehouse was found dead at the age of 27, from alcohol poisoning. It was pretty obvious from the word go that whatever became of the troubled star, she would leave two solid legacies behind her: her music and her style.

In pictures: Amy Winehouse's style legacy
Walk up any high street, even now, and everywhere you'll see girls riffing on her style signatures: cropped, skinny jeans; ballet pumps; tiny shirts knotted at the waist; sexy pencil skirts, and scarves tied jauntily in their hair.

And so it was that yesterday in Paris, Amy's memory was toasted in the most fashionable way imaginable, as the muse for Jean Paul Gaultier's spring/summer 2012 couture collection.
Gaultier sent a procession of beehive clad models teetering down the catwalk complete with heavy black winged eyeliner and Amy's trademark beauty spot above their lips.
Whether couture customers, who spend tens of thousands on each outfit, want to be seen in high society dressed like the tragic star was kind of a moot point. As a spectacle and a tribute, Gaultier did Amy proud.

How To Create Emma Watson's Gold Leaf Smokey Eye Makeup

We Love Emma Watson's New And Striking Look With Her Gold Leaf And Smokey Eye Makeup

How she has grown up! We have watched Emma grow up from a cute, fluffy-haired little schoolgirl in the first Harry Potter film (where she was admittedly a bit of a know-it-all!) into a pretty and attractive starlet who is as comfortable on the red carpet as she would be in her own home. At the New York premiere of the Harry Potter film, The Deathly Hallows Part II, Emma monopolised the red carpet in her Bottega Veneta golden dress. Although the dress is amazing, we were mostly interested in her amazing smokey, gold leaf eye makeup. We might not be able to afford the dress for this season's parties, but the eye makeup is definitely something that is attainable, and we have found out just how to create this amazing look, which would look fantastic at Christmas and New Year parties, or just anytime you get an excuse to put on some dramatic and sparkling eyes.

How To Create Emma's Gold Leaf Smokey Eye Makeup

To start, prepare your skin using a light, natural foundation and apply over your face to give a flawless and light coverage. If you have any imperfections, use a concealer to lightly cover any shadows etc.
Using a black eyeshadow, and a good eyeshadow blender or brush, work the shadow all over your eyelid up to the creaseline and then create a wing effect on the outer corner of your eye. You might want to dust below your eyes with loose translucent face powder before applying the black eyeshadow, as this will help you to brush away gently any eyeshadow which falls below your eyes without creating any smudges.
Then using a black kohl eyeliner pencil, apply all along the lower lash line, smudging the eyeliner to soften the look underneath the lashes. Then apply the eyeliner to the inner edge of your lower lashes to create definition.
Using a good black mascara, coat both your upper and lower lashes twice to add to the dramatic effect.
Then with a gold glitter eyeshadow, which can be found in makeup collections such as Rimmel or Barry M, apply the gold eyeshadow to the inner corners of your eyelid and blend it into the inner corner of the lower lid.
You will need some eye jewels to complete this look, and these are available at Boots, Superdrug or online, apply these to the outer corners of your eyes, following the instructions, using three or four.

To finish off the look apply a natural peachy, pink powder blusher to the apples of your cheeks, and then blend up along your cheekbones. For your lips, apply a natural dusky pink lipstick, don't use a lipliner, but keep the colour looking natural. Relatively neutral lips are the way to go with such dramatic eyes.

How To Create A Fishtail Plait

How To Create The Latest Celebrity Hair Trend - Fishtail Plaits

Fishtail plaits are the lastest hair trend to hit the celebrity red carpets as well as the fashion show catwalks this season. Celebrities from Rihanna to Fearne Cotton have been wearing this stylish look, and the fashion house Missoni literally made headlines when they styled all of their models in twin fishtail plaits worn forward at their Autumn/Winter shows. If you fancy having a go at recreating this look for yourself here's how to do it. All you will need is roughly shoulder-length hair, some hair elastics and hairspray.

How To Create A Fishtail Plait

We'll first look at creating a single fishtail plait worn to the side like Fearne. Draw your hair into a low ponytail to one side of your head, don't worry if wisps of hair are left out of the pony tail as his look is meant to have texture.
Then divide your ponytail into two sections - you will need to look into a mirror when you are doing the next part.
Take about a third of one of your sections of hair from the back of the section, and pull it around to the front, then draw it across so that you can hold it with the second section.

Moving onto the second section of your hair, repeat the above, taking about a third of the secton from the back of the second section of hair and pull it around to the front of your plait, and cross it over so you can hold it with the first section of your hair.
Continue repeating the above two steps, you should start to see the fishtail appear after another couple of times of pulling your hair around to the front and crossing over to the opposite section.
Keep on pulling sections of hair across until you reach the bottom of your plait, and secure with a hair elastic.
Then gently pull wisps of hair from your plait to give a textured look, and finish with hairspray to hold in place.

How To Create Two Fishtail Plaits

If you want to create the Missoni twin fishtail plait look, then divide your hair as you would do for pigtails, and follow the above steps for each plait. When they are finished, pull them so they hang to the front of your shoulders framing your face, and use hairspray to hold in place.

WELCOME TO AUTUMN WINTER 2012 - THE INSPIRED COLLECTIVE FROM VAN DAL

Unsurprisingly trends continue to reflect the general mood, whether in the form of a positive nostalgia or as a reaction to austerity and harder times. With three key looks we have a mix of both for the new season. They include ‘Clear Concept’ a mid-century inspired modernism, ‘Highland Fling’ a British heritage reflection and the glitzy rebelliousness of ‘From Russia with Love’ a subtle nod to the timeless glamour of the Ballet Russe in all its embellished glory. The result is a stunning collection, with seven key groups, enough we would like to think to warm the cockles of any bank manager or customer alike.

MADE IN ENGLAND

Having launched Van Dal Vintage in celebration of our 75th anniversary we find ourselves riding the crest of a tidal wave of British manufacturing revivalism.

Referencing key elements of the ‘From Russia with Love’ trend the highlight of the Made in England collection is the Aurora II, a perfect example of a contemporary classic but with added bling. One, of course, that is made in our Norwich factory.

DON’T MAKE DO. AMEND.

Available for use on selected Van Dal styles in the Made in England group our new mix and match group with removable trims neatly straddles two of the seasons key trends.

With embellishment in place they happily tap along to the Ballet Russe. Conversely, and without trim, the cleaner simpler lines dominate and a ‘Clear Concept’ minimalism emerges.

Trims can of course be used on any plain court or handbag however selected shoes such as Holt shown below come with one pair included and the option of two looks. With more trims available at £18 per pair the choice is there for one shoe and four different looks. So don’t make do with one, open up the possibilities and amend!

BONNIE BROGUES

Ok so this is no Tarrantino-esque pulp fiction but the immortal line “ bring out the gimp” is a perfect introduction to our collection of Highland inspired brogues and loafers.

Beautifully crafted with soft nutty leathers the punched detailing and gimped edging look delicious. With a fantastic and super flexible partner loafer, called Windsor, you can say goodbye to those stiff, stuffy and poor imitations, and embrace a new level of comfort.

Clyde brogue shoe

Available in 3 – 8 inc ½

Fitting: D

RRP £100

FLEXIBLE FRIENDS

In a continual quest for better shoes we set about deconstructing our

traditional courts. The aim was to maintain the trademark Van Dal

look whilst further improving flexibility and comfort.

Shoe construction inevitably involves compromise amid layers of material and adhesive. In combination these help to provide those nice straight lines that rise to a perfect ‘clip’ at the heel. The downside can be a lack of flexibility which can reduce comfort.

The result of our work here though is a range of leather courts that offer both the look of Van Dal with the comfort of a casual shoe. Buttery soft foulard leathers, flexible outsoles, engineered linings. The result is a shoe as flexible as a leotard worn by the Green Goddess at her best.

Wells court shoe

Available in 3 – 8 inc ½

Fitting: D

RRP £75

Pitti Bimbo 74 Autumn/Winter 2012-13: The Trend Report

Junior reports from the 74th edition of childrenswear tradeshow Pitti Bimbo, held at Fortessa De Basso, Florence

Pitti Bimbo has ended and the main trends for Autumn/Winter 2012-13 have been seen over the last few days. There was a lot of inspiration and here is our definitive top ten list of what to look out for over the coming months...

1) Lurex, metallic prints, sequins and all manner of glitter and shine. There is a move towards lurex knitwear and with strong colours such as emerald green, red and pink used with the shiny thread, unusually black lurex is one of the key trends we have seen used for knitwear and in tailored fabrics for jackets and coats.

2) Complicated finishes, velvet with heat burnished patterns and devore acid etchings, tweeds with embroidery, wool pique and cloche bubbled silks, texture is very important. Also pleating is a favoured technique.

3) Knitwear is huge, lots of aran and cabled patterns for big long cardigan knits for girls and hooded bomber styles for boys, sometimes in tan, chocolate brown, forest greens, sometimes grey or brights and sometimes with snowflake and other mountain/ski traditional style patterning. Overlarge knitted beanies, berets and pull on style hats were teamed with chunky scarves.

4) Shapes remain volume led for dresses and skirts with bubble and tulip shapes popular or many layered tulle petticoat skirts. There is a feeling of the 60's with some simple shift shapes at top labels and capes are popular, there's lots of layering still around too with overlong knitwear dresses or tunics layered over shirts and petticoat skirts so only a few inches of skirt are visible. Trousers on the other hand are super skinny still for both boys and girls, rolled to a mid calf length sometimes to show off patterned socks or boot decoration and there are lots of patterned and decorated leggings.

5) The obsession with fur in Italy continues with vivid bright dyed pelts and fur used for banding on skirts al la Prada, for collars and cuffs, earmuffs and Russian style huge bearskin hats. There are boleros and mini capes and fur trims on knitwear, coats, dresses and bags, some is fake, some real. It is also used combined with knitting as if it was knitted in at the same time.

6) Collars have become complicated, detachable or not they are beaded, sequinned, embroidered, lace and printed vinyl.

7) Pattern is around in some ditsy florals and cabbage rose styles but mostly things are graphic, bold black and white prints, overlarge dogtooth, also lots of spots in all varieties, overlarge or tiny or animal pattern leopard style. Padded jackets for boys are in metallic tones or banded in three different colours.

8) Colours are either muted and silvery grey's, stone, soft pastels, black and white or strong teal, raspberry, cobalt blue, purple, orange and mustard. Flourescents are used for contrast touches. Black and the traditional Christmas red are also strong. Gold is used just as much if not more so than silver this year with taffeta's, silks and velvet in the tone.

9) Paul Smith launched a shoe range with styles that sum up the season, for the boys there are some fabulous loafers in bi or tri coloured patterns, for girls tap and ballet styles in silver, gold and coloured glitter prevail. Boot shapes are bikerish, black and studded or decorated in glitter or fur too. The Yeti boots of last season did not reappear but there are more classic snow boots with fur top trims around and loads of Ugg style sheepskin boots with studded decorations such as heart emblems or ribbon trims.

10) Themes run from preppie college days to rock n'roll, woodland inspiration to the imaginary little world of princesses or Parisian chic.

Like supermodel mother, like daughter

Cindy Crawford's long-limbed daughter is picked to be the face of the inaugural Young Versace campaign

There is something strikingly familiar about 10-year-old Kaia Gerber, the classic beauty fronting the first Young Versace campaign launching this spring. With her all-American model looks, flowing brunette locks and high cheekbones it is unsurprising to learnt that Kaia is, in fact, following in her mother's footsteps as she is the daughter of one of the original 'supermodels'; Cindy Crawford.

Cindy Crawford was herself a muse of Gianni Versace, so it seems fitting that her daughter follows in her footsteps - albeit seven years ahead of her mother, who wasn't discovered until she was 17. The model mother was on set with Kaia at the shoot. “Watching her in front of the camera was a fantastic experience,” she said. “I am so proud of her.”

Lisa Shepherd

Past British Hairdresser of the Year and colour expert of TV’s ‘Ten Years Younger’, Lisa Shepherd is here to help prime you for picture perfect hair. The great news for the style savvy and hair aware is that it’s easier than you think to make a great impression – it’s more about the carefully undone ‘do’ than hours of work with the irons. Stock up on hair elastic, bobby pins, a few well chosen accessories and with Lisa’s tips for quality care, condition and style, you’ll soon be good to go.

All those late nights, hot clubs, alcohol and hectic schedule can be hard on your hair. The looks this season are supposed to look artfully effortless but never dull.

So treat your hair to a weekly intensive moisturising mask, through the winter months and don’t forget to use a heat defence spray to protect your hair from frequent heat styling.

Tip two: Plaits

If you are blessed with shoulder length tresses or longer, then this is a great trend choice, it also looks even better the day after and leaving the plait in gives the added bonus of a day off for your hair. Go for cuts that are lightly layered especially around the face, so that you can easily loosen strands to achieve that ‘on trend’ look. Spray wet hair with a styling spray and dry with the fingers or a vent brush on a gentle heat.

Create a low side parting and make a traditional plait at the nape; plait the hair right to the very end and secure with hair elastic (not a rubber band from the postman, it will damage your hair!). ‘Distress’ the look by gently teasing out strands with your fingers all the way down and around the face. For shorter hair you can create plaits around the hairline and once again pull out strands for a ‘halo’ effect.

Tip three: Ponies

Possibly the biggest trend this season, you can choose to go for the cleanest finish by blow drying hair with a paddle brush for ultimate gloss then brushing straight back and securing in a smooth pony at the nape. Add a patent Alice Band and you’ve got it! Or secure the pony high on the head for the ultimate swing.

Feeling a little more laid back? Blow dry the hair with the fingers, backbrush lightly through the surface layers of the hair, create a razor edge side parting and then catch it all up in a loose band on one side. For a night out, you can add tiny glittery clips for a touch of party time pizazz. To vary your slouchy pony, catch up the ends and roll them over the elastic, securing with pins for a loose relaxed bun either in the nape or to one side. Finish with a breeze of flexible hairspray for a natural hold.

Tip four: Tousled

Shorter styles and chin length hair are all about bringing out a natural playful texture. For curls, blow dry on a low heat cupping into a diffuser, define curls with a curl enhancer, but don’t leave it at that, take random sections and backbrush or rub with the fingers to distress the curl.

If your hair is very straight then spray wet hair with a volume and restructure spray, blow dry with your fingers and then add a bend or slight twist to random sections of hair with narrow irons or small tongs. Finish with a strong hairspray and a shine spray.

Tip five: Hot shades

It’s open season on colour so choose from a natural palette of dark blondes to cool browns and if you are working the root trend then it has to be professionally on purpose to keep you looking perfect, no grown out roots here.

Red is still rock on and very ‘now’ and here anything goes from the lightest baby pink through to warm crimson.
